What to see and do
Monastery and Basilica
The essential heart of the visit, combining the religious complex with dramatic views of the serrated mountain.
La Moreneta
Visit the throne of the Virgin of Montserrat, patron saint of Catalonia. A timed reservation helps avoid unnecessary queues.
The Escolania
If the day and time coincide, listen to the Salve and Virolai performed by Montserrat’s renowned boys’ choir. The choir does not sing every day.
Sant Joan and the viewpoints
The funicular reaches its upper station in a few minutes. From around 1,000 metres, the monastery and even the Pyrenees can be visible on clear days.
Santa Cova
A gentle excursion along the monumental Rosary path leads to the chapel traditionally linked to the discovery of the Virgin’s image.
Museum and local products
With extra time, visit the Museum—usually open around 10:00–18:45—or browse stalls selling honey, cheese, mató and other local produce.
04 · Before you leave
A few decisions that make the visit better
- Leave Barcelona early enough to arrive before 10:00, especially at weekends and in high season.
- Reserve timed sanctuary and Black Madonna access in advance when visitor numbers are high.
- Check the Escolania calendar before choosing the departure time.
- Confirm both funiculars are operating on the day; seasonal and maintenance closures are possible.
- Wear shoes with grip, carry water and allow more time if anyone in the group has reduced mobility.
- Parking beside the sanctuary is limited; the driver may need to coordinate drop-off and parking.
Your time, your Montserrat
Half a day or a full mountain day
Choose five hours for a comfortable first visit with the monastery and Sant Joan. Allow seven to eight hours when Santa Cova, additional viewpoints, the museum or an unhurried lunch matter to you.
